In Charlotte, NC, during the summer of 1934, one of the single greatest events in modern evangelism happened. At that time, Mordecai Ham, an evangelist known for leading tent revivals across the United States, was drawing large crowds at his revival meetings. During one such event, two young boys entered the crowded tent and soon realized there were no available seats. Disappointed, they left and began walking down the road. Meanwhile, an usher witnessed their departure and felt compelled to make space for them. He asked a family to slide down, creating two open seats, and quickly caught up with the boys, telling them, “The Lord told me to make room for you, and we have two seats for you.” The boys, encouraged by the usher, returned to the revival. Later that night, after Evangelist Ham spoke of Jesus and invited the crowd to repent and trust Him as Savior, one of the two boys walked to the altar and gave his life to Christ. That young boy’s name was Billy, later known as Billy Graham. While many attribute Billy’s conversion to Mordecai Ham’s message, it is important to note that he heard it only because of the usher’s obedience. Though we do not know the usher’s name, he serves as an example of what God can do through our willingness to follow His direction.
