This past Sunday I had the honor of preaching at Zion United Methodist Church in Gretna, Virginia. It was their 185th Homecoming service and being a part of this special milestone really touched my heart. This beautiful piece of Virginia is a “home away from home” for me. I love the beautiful scenery and the hearts of His people. Their hospitality towards me was fantastic and let me tell you, those folks can cook!
However, it was something far more meaningful that made this day so great. In 1972, I held a revival at Zion UMC. During that time, we saw people come forward and make decisions for Christ. During my time there on Sunday, I was honored to preach in front of 12 of those who made their first decisions during that revival 46 years ago. I was encouraged and humbled to meet the children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren of those who heard the Lord’s sweet call all those years ago. It really reminded me that when our lives our radically changed by God, it is the beginning of a new and exciting journey as well as the beginning of a legacy that will be shared with generations to come.
My sermon was on Mark 4:35, Jesus calming the storm. The Lord was present and blessed our time together. We saw 4 people make first time decisions for Jesus. Now their exciting journey and legacy has begun!
