Victory Weekend’s Director of Outreach, Michael Coleman, described our event at the fall Dover race as “the stuff event organizers and team members dream about!” Steve called it “a great weekend.” Other team members used superlatives such as “powerful” and “the best ever.”
Ministry friend and Dover businessman Jeff Townsend made his first trip to Lot 10 which he described as a “tough arena.” He came away believing that the presence of the Lord was there and that good seeds were planted in the lives of the men, women, and young people. Jeff noted that he felt that the people appreciated and respected Steve and the team’s being there for them.
Keith Walters, Director of Well Ministry at Christ Wesleyan Church in Milton, PA brought 4 people from their church and said that it was “life-changing to go into that party atmosphere to tell people about Jesus.” Keith said that he and his church members were a “little anxious” but came away “glad to be part of such a great event and pumped up to participate next year.”
The Victory Weekend that they described took place amidst a thick cloud of smoke drifting up from the scores of campfires at the legendary Lot 10. Our prime location proved to be ideal as team members spent time visiting neighboring campsites and spreading the word about what would take place later in the evening.
Friday night saw Southern Edge Band and Charee White in top form as they performed for an ebbing and flowing crowd of about 3,500 race fans. The celebration was highlighted by the onstage appearance of a Purple Heart awardee who elicited great appreciation and applause from the crowd.
Saturday was even better as an estimated 8,000 fans were treated to great music from the guys of Southern Edge Band, crowd favorite Charee White, and a fireworks display at the track which was located behind the Victory Weekend mobile stage. Our tribute to veterans, active duty personnel, and local first responders was especially poignant as 145 heroes were honored. A Gold Star mother approached one of our team members and said, “My son was killed while serving. May I have a medal?” Likewise, a girl of about 11years of age went to another member and asked for a medal to honor her father who was also lost in battle. There were enough tears to clear the smoke out of everyone’s eyes.
Steve’s powerful and persuasive gospel message resulted in some 238 people responding that they had made a decision to make Jesus Lord of their lives.
The fall race in Dover may well have been “our best Victory Weekend event ever” as Steve told the staff when he returned.
