I believe that God is at work in our lives even in moments where we might not expect it (or deserve it). Two recent events in my life have caused me to appreciate the little things He does more than ever.
While spending a few days at the beach last month I was deeply engrossed in reading and didn’t notice that the tide was coming in until a wave lapped up to my chair. I got up and moved back a few yards and resumed reading. When my wife Barb joined me a little while later, I stood up and realized that my cell phone was gone. I searched frantically with no success. I have to admit that I was a little upset with myself for losing such an important item. Barb and I prayed and asked God for a miracle.
About four hours later I got a “ping” on my iPad which indicated that it had connected with my cell phone giving the location. I immediately walked down the beach to a lifeguard stand, which was about half a mile from the place where I had lost the phone. The lifeguard said someone had stepped on the phone in the surf and picked it up and gave it to her. I called my son David and it still worked after being in the Atlantic ocean for 4 hours, amazingly! What are the odds that the phone would be found and that it worked after being submerged for so long?! God is good.
The very next weekend I was hiking the Appalachian Trail with my son-in-law Howard and two of my grandsons. While hiking I was talking to the boys about the power of faith and how God works in our lives. When we hike we take two vehicles, parking one at our ending point and then driving the other to our starting point. This works beautifully – except when you leave the keys in the vehicle parked at the starting point, which is exactly what we managed to do!
We were well into our trek when I realized our predicament. I started thinking out loud about what we could do while the boys were very concerned that we would somehow be stranded without a ride to our car. I told them not to worry that God would have a solution for us.
Shortly thereafter we came upon a man who was coming up from the river where he had been fishing. After asking him about the fishing, I asked him where he was going next, he told us that he was headed for his parent’s house which was located – you guessed it – very near the exact spot where the vehicle with the needed keys was parked. He said that he would be glad to take me to the car and I was waiting on Howard and the boys when they arrived in Harpers Ferry. It was a great example for the grandsons about the ways in which God takes care of even the small things in our lives when we have faith and let Him be God.
God is Good!
