“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” John 15:13 (NIV)
on May 22, 2026

Memorial Day is more than the beginning of summer or a long weekend with family and friends; it is a sacred opportunity to pause and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting the freedoms we enjoy deserve our deepest gratitude and respect. As we gather for celebrations and ceremonies, we are reminded that true freedom often comes at a great cost, and Memorial Day invites us to honor those who were willing to lay down their lives for others.

For Christians, Memorial Day can also point our hearts toward the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ. In John 15:13 (NIV), Jesus says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” The selfless love demonstrated by our fallen heroes reflects, in part, the perfect love Christ showed on the cross for all humanity. While we honor those who served our nation with courage and sacrifice, we can also reflect on the hope, grace, and eternal freedom found through faith in Jesus. This Memorial Day, may we remember both the blessings of liberty and the incredible gift of salvation that calls us to live with gratitude, humility, and love for others.
